Bringing Global Insights Home: YWCA Hunter at the Reach to Recovery International Conference

YWCA Hunter Executive Director, Caz O'Brien, recently represented our organisation at the 20th Reach to Recovery International Breast Cancer Support Conference in Malaysia, joining delegates from over 30 countries dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by breast cancer.

Caz was joined by Professor Sandi Hayes, one of the experts behind ENCORE and Director of Research at the Viertel Cancer Research Centre, Cancer Council Queensland. Held over three days, the conference brought together breast cancer survivors, healthcare professionals, researchers, advocates and community leaders from around the world to share knowledge, explore the latest research and strengthen global connections in breast cancer survivorship.

With the theme "Harnessing the Power of Communication – Listen, Support, Connect," the conference highlighted the vital role that peer support, education, advocacy and collaboration play in helping women navigate life after breast cancer.

For YWCA Hunter, the experience reinforced the importance of ENCORE and the impact the program continues to have on women across the Hunter.

"Being surrounded by so many people who are tirelessly working to ensure no woman faces breast cancer alone was incredibly inspiring. The passion, generosity and commitment in the room was truly overwhelming," said Caz.

"Hearing the stories and challenges faced by women in different parts of the world reminded me just how valuable Australia's breast cancer support services are. But it also reinforced that our work is far from finished. Every woman deserves access to the care, connection and recovery programs that can help her move beyond cancer and embrace life with confidence and hope."

The conference explored a wide range of topics including peer support, patient navigation, survivorship, exercise, nutrition, advocacy and the latest research, providing valuable insights that will help shape the future of ENCORE.

As the sole provider of ENCORE in Australia, YWCA Hunter remains committed to growing the program so more women can benefit from its evidence-based approach to recovery following breast cancer treatment.

The knowledge, ideas and connections gained through the conference will support our ongoing efforts to strengthen ENCORE, build new partnerships and expand access to the program across the Hunter.

We extend our thanks to Reach to Recovery International and the National Cancer Society Malaysia for hosting such an inspiring event and bringing together a global community united by a shared vision: ensuring every woman affected by breast cancer has access to the support she deserves.

Together, we continue to learn, collaborate and advocate for better outcomes for women recovering from breast cancer - both here in the Hunter and around the world.
