Program Info
Suitable for: Tai Chi is gentle enough to be practised by everyone, including people with limited movement.
Style: We practise mainly Sun style and Yang style tai chi. Our practice is slow and controlled, with a higher stance, no jumping nor high kicks. There will be a very strong qigong emphasis, relaxing and nurturing, making it more popular for mature participants.
In 2026, the beginner class will practise selections from Dr Paul Lam’s Tai Chi for Health programs.
The advanced class will be learning and practising the popular Yang Style 24 Form. This is suitable for participants with at least one year experience in a tai chi class.
Attendance: While pay-as-you-go options are available, we encourage participants to enroll for the full term. The course is designed as a progressive learning program, with each class building upon the previous week to support steady development and a deeper understanding of the practice.
Facilitator: Lorraine Norton, Senior Trainer, Tai Chi for Health Institute. AUSactive Exercise Professional.
What to Wear: Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing and flat well supported shoes
BYO: Water bottle
Venue: YWCA Hunter, 24 Dawson St, Cooks Hill NSW

“Wonderful Tai Chi program led by Lorraine on a Friday morning. As a beginner, I find this class very inclusive and welcoming. Good for body and mind equally. Also, it’s amazing to see everyone’s progress over time, as even when we think we know a technique, then we start on the path to perfecting it, which we can see, and is very rewarding.”

Tai Chi is a gentle exercise form where participants move in an upright posture, in a slow and controlled manner.
It can be practised standing or sitting. It exercises the entire body, all the joints, muscles, and internal organs. It cultivates the Qi (氣) or life energy.
Practising tai chi enhances our health and wellbeing and is particularly effective in improving arthritic stiffness and developing better balance. Tai chi calms the mind, helps to relieve stress, and promotes a sense of harmony and wellness.
Above all, tai chi is safe, easy to learn and can be practised anytime, anywhere. Practising tai chi may help to:
improve posture
increase flexibility and range of motion
improve balance and stability
strengthen bones
enhance circulation
lower blood pressure
invigorate cognitive function
cultivate better concentration
promote relaxation
improve quality of sleep
enhance overall wellbeing
Amazing benefits from such a simple exercise!
